I hadn't thought of hard candy. I always thought the jaw had to be working up and down, as in chewing motion. It's worth a try.

I actually do that even now when i am flying. I try to move my jaws as if sucking on a candy and it does work for me...I have read somewhere it is actually the salivation and the movement of the jaws that is necessary as that helps the balancing area of the ears get adjusted.
