Check the Tires! 4 Years, 2 Months ago Karma: 0
I know someone who recently rented a vehicle and was told "don't worry about the low tire warning, we checked and it's fine" only to find out that a 4 hour drive later, the tire was indeed going (and subsequently totally went) flat.

Lesson... check your rentals before leaving the lot. At least the things you *can* check like tires.

Katharina, excellent suggestion. I always take a walk around my rental car before I drive off, if for no other reason then to check basic safety issues (like tires).

It's also a good idea to note any defects to the body that they may accuse you of later. I know that the rental car company is supposed to do this, but I don't trust them and always make the "rounds" of my rental before I leave their place.

That's very wise. The one I mentioned even had a low tire light flashing and they still said don't worry about it. THEN since the drive had been to another state, they wouldn't even let the person trade it in for another vehicle (national chain I won't name here) because it was "just a tire issue and we changed the tire." Yeah, after making the person wait for a few hours until they got there and then drive back without a spare!

If I have enough time, I go once or twice around the block right after renting, so if I find something weird, then I return the car right away. That was the advice of a friend that had a very bad experience right after renting his car.

That's a very good practice/habit to get into, yes. Would you believe that the same person I mentioned before (frequent traveler/car renter) had the SAME thing happen last week? Different car, same "don't worry if the tire light comes on" and AGAIN after driving for a while, they needed air. And yes, he'll be changing rental places next time.

This is excellent advice, and if you ever tow a trailer, I'd suggest double checking the hitch and safety chains as well.

I was in a van once that had the trailer it was towing come loose except for one safety chain.

It could have been very tragic, but we were fortunate.
