Deposit requirements at Enterprise vary by branch. I would contact the specific branch prior to rental or book with another company.

I guess it's okay if they don't put it through unless it's necessary when the car's returned.

I don't suppose that this policy is related to the age of the driver renting the car?

I know that can affect insurance rates and even who can rent a car with some companies.

It could be many things. The best advice is to always call ahead and ask. It helps avoid messy surprises.

It seems like a large deposit and if you were booking the car in advance you should have been told about the deposit. The branch should be able to explain why it was charged in this case and they may be able to tell you how to avoid it in future.

I don't usually rent cars, so I am confused. I always assumed that deposits are temporary and may be refunded when the final account is settled.

I seem to remember that in the days when they had credit card slips som car rental companies took a deposit but if the car was returned ok they did not process the deposit slip. Maybe now they have to process the card straight away.
