My rule when it comes to rental cars is cheap and small. But cheap comes first!! Only twice I rented expensive cars. Once here in Berlin, I rented a Jaguar and I drove to Hamburg on the Autobahn. I broke my own speed reacord, and did 215 KPH, which is roughly 135 miles per hour. It was great! and it was legal to speed that much!
And then when I went with my girlfriend to New York, she wanted to rent a Cadillac, so we did.

I often rent a van because it has a larger capacity to accommodate people compared to other cars..

Generally we hire a smaller car.. a hatchback of some sort.. somehing easy to drive, easy to park, easy to insure, and unlikely to attract jealous glances. My hubby is not a big car fan either.. as long as it gets him where he wants to go that's enough.

We are much the same, and since I have to drive it I have the final say. I tend to opt for a type of car that I am used to driving, it just makes it easier.

I splurge a little and get a nice vehicle that is a larger mid-size than my own car. I like more bells and whistles. I don't have a regular make I rent, but it's always one I can have some fun in.
