New Battlefield! Antietam 1 Year ago Karma: 0
I know I've mentioned enjoying Civil War battlefields here on the forum in the past. WELL! We recently visited a new one.

We started in Gettysburg, our favorite haunt and then drove an hour to Antietam. I like it! It's a lot closer to G'burg than I was thinking.

We went over the mountain where Camp David is located, and that is *so* very peaceful... wouldn't mind renting a cabin up there sometime.

Are the battlefields preserved in some way? I ask because I have been to the sites of some of the English battlefields and there is very little to see or to mark the history of the spot.

Yes, there are hundreds of monuments and markers (well, thousands in Gettysburg actually)... and all kinds of plaques and things to read, lookout towers, etc.. Then there are visitor centers with museums, old buildings preserved to visit, etc.

I'm very impressed with Gettysburg and Antietam but Fredericksburg was a big stress for us due to lack of guidance on how to reach the special places.

Within a year or two we want to visit another big one... Vicksburg in Mississippi.

That sounds very interesting and much better than the way sites are marked here. We have lots of old castles and things like that. At Warwick Castle there was a really good exhibition that helped me to understand much more about battles than visiting the sites had done.

Well now ya can't beat a bona fide castle! I'd like to stay in one of the few that they rent out for overnight stays. How fun would that be?!

Battlefields never sounded so interesting to me until you mentioned it Katharina, here too there are not many really preserved so when u do go and visit a particular battlefield it is just plain grassy ground to us,
