Well in Benton Illinois there is a Cafe called "Nostalgia" and it has incredible food. Melt in your mouth steak, seafood salads...etc. Really good stuff.

A few miles south of Benton in the town of West Frankfort is a littler diner called "Lola's". It's pretty great too.

I live in Montreal, where even the little local cafes are exotic, so if I had to pick an intimate local place, it would be the Taj Mahal Indian restaurant. It's about the size of a livng room, but the food is big on taste. they have lots of vegetarian options too.
