2011 List of Clean and Healthy Beaches
Thursday, 14 July 2011
There is no place anyone would rather be on summer vacation than the beach and the Clean Beaches Coalition has recently released its annual list of clean beaches. These are beaches that are well managed from an environmental perspective and that are certified as being clean and healthy.

The certification program for clean beaches is called Blue Wave and it was the first of its kind in the U.S. The program is in its 12th year and it sets the stage for the more reliably clean and healthy beaches in the U.S. This year 20 U.S. territories and states have been represented, having beaches that have passed the certification process. These include: American Samoa, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Indiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Texas, U.S. Virgin Islands, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.

A whopping $5 trillion in revenues is generated from coastal tourism each year, which includes beach recreation, and there are more than 2 billion visits to beaches each year by Americans who want to get out and have some fun in the sun and the cool ocean breezes.
