I was just wondering what are the best beaches in Southern California? My parents are planning a trip to the area and were wondering. Thanks

When I was growing up in L.A., my family would always go to Zuma Beach. The beach was always clean, and it was a safe place to take a family for a leisurely visit.

If you want things to do besides lay on the sand or taking a dip in the water, I highly recommend Venice Beach. Lots and lots of things to do there.

The Santa Monica Pier can be a lot of fun as well. There are good restaurants, shopping, good parking, a very cool carousel and a large game arcade.

I haven't been in the water at the Santa Monica beach in years, but it used to be one of the best, though a bit crowded and loud. Zuma was nice but you needed to watch out for zip tides.
Playa del Rey has a fine beach if you don't mind the planes taking off from LAX.
Will Rodgers beach is a good one as well.

Does anyone remember Pacific Ocean Park (POP)?

POP was a twenty-eight acre, nautical-themed amusement park built on a pier at Santa Monica which was intended to compete with Disneyland. It closed in 1967.

I have some fond memories of it.

I remember POP! Thanks for reminding me! Do you remember the "egg beater" ride that swung you out over the water? How about the rotating floor, the funny mirrors and (my first experience with)black light?
It's too bad it got torn down! What an amazing place that would be to go back to! Thanks gaiamycat!!!

The Rotating Floor! Was that the ride where you stood against the wall of a round room, then they spin the room so that the centrifugal force pushes you against the wall and then they lower the floor so you seem to be floating?

That was one of my favorite "rides" as a kid.
