I never realized that traveling before a main holiday would be cheaper. I have heard after is cheaper and mid week but I just always assumed right before a main holiday was more exspensive.

For holidays like Christmas it is more expensive around a week before Christmas day, but for example for Thanksgiving you can get pretty good deals traveling up to the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, simply because people travel exactly the day before. It all depends on how long is the holiday you are planing on traveling.

It's also a good idea to get tickets early, but be aware that prices can change very quickly... so when you get a price that sounds reasonable to you, grab it. I've too often thought "oh, this may be less expensive in a few days" only to end up paying more.
