It would be a very interesting journey! You can get a lot of information online for England and Wales and you can buy birth, marriage and death certificates online from the General Register Office. Older records are more patchy for Ireland, I don't know about Scotland as I have no ancestors from Scotland .

Well now this is very interesting! I knew that I can obtain birth certificates for a fee here in America but I never even considered that maybe I'd be able to do the same in another country.

Katharina, there is some useful information on the UK Directgov site and there is a _link_ to the general register office site to order certificates.

make sure that you use the oficial site to order certificates (it will have gov.uk in the address) as there are some sites offering certificates at hugely inflated prices.

Thank you, justontime... I'll have to look this up and see what I can find. That would be ironic if I've been looking for a few lines all these years without any luck and the solution would be as simple as ordering a birth certificate.
