I have been thinking of tracing my roots for quite some time now and going to the places where my ansectors lived or were supposed to live...it seems a fascinating journey...has anyone else here done something similar.

Yes, but only within my own country. It is a very interesting thing to do. To progress further I need to visit Ireland and I hope to do that next year. Ther is also a connection with india in my family, but I doubt I will ever get to see India.

My grandfather used to talk about wandering the Carpathian Mountains with no sense of national borders other than peaks and valleys. I have always wanted to recapture that adventure, maybe on a conservation expedition to the mountains of Central Europe.

Atula, thank you that is kind, I will have to look up the place names and let you know, they are not places that I can pronounce and I could not spell them from memory. I didn't know my grandfather but my father always told me that he spoke with great fondness about India.

Some of the remote mountain villages my grandfather mentioned no longer exist on a map. You may end up having to look up old maps in the library to futher your quest.
