When I travel, I typically keep my cell turned off and just power it up when I make a call.

I hear that if you keep it on, you can be charged with some very significant roaming charges.

Is this still the case?

Well, I travel a lot and unless you make a call or receive a call, there is no other roaming charges if you have your phone on. They charge roaming for calls, not for being on.

It's odd but I'm one of those people who rarely uses her cell phone. I often forget to even turn it on. I went almost 44 years without a cell and it seems the habit is hard to break.

It becomes pretty irritating when your cell is on roaming and you get a call from a bank or some sales call etc. which you are not interested in and you have to pay for the incoming roaming charges.....

That's how I understood my package as well. I do, however, keep the phone turned off often to save the battery. The phone is more of a portable answering machine for me.
