My grandfather used to talk about wandering the Carpathian Mountains with no sense of national borders other than peaks and valleys. I have always wanted to recapture that adventure, maybe on a conservation expedition to the mountains of Central Europe.

I think it will defintely be one of the greatest journey you ever make if you could do that...your grandfather was so right in saying that mountains give you the sense of borderless world...it surely would be a wonderful idea to really plan this trip....

I remember my grandfather telling me all kind of stories of his childhood when he had lost his mother...and his father remairried..and how the new mother was so nice to them..and she was very brave as she cathed a snake once by his tail....listening to all these stories...I used to get all excited to visit those homes and towns where they lived..even as a child.

What towns did they live in, Atula? How long ago did they leave? have you been there since? I wonder how the places have changed since then.

I think our grandparents often play a big part in firing our interest in the past and our desire to find out more about the places our ancestors knew. It was my grandmother's stories that first led me to want to trace my family tree.

It is true that we sometimes seem more receptive to hearing about days gone by from grandparents than from parents. I know that I would sometimes get impatient with how they did back in the old country when my parents talked about it, but not when my grandparents did.

Has anyone ever done a professional search on their family tree? Was it expensive? Was it worth it?
