Life hadn't changed much in the last couple of hundred years... only in the last 10-15 years has modern life reached the villages.. My grandpa still went to work in the fields by donkey, right up to his death 16 years ago, and the only phone in the village until recently was the one at the grocery shop.

Stav, it is hard to imagine life being like that so recently. You should write down your memories of your grandparents and their way of life because one day your nieces and nephews and their children will want to know about it.

Has anyone ever done a professional search on their family tree? Was it expensive? Was it worth it?

I've not commissioned one myself, but I have a distant cousin who did this for the family lineage. I think it was rather expensive since it involved traveling, yes. And if I recall, the hired guy didn't come up with much new stuff at all.

I've done extensive research myself, but no trips out of the country for that purpose yet. It might come to that if I keep hitting brick walls.

If I'd ever plan to do this, I'd have a quite extensive (AND expensive!) endeavor on my hands. I'd have to visit Germany, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and England for starters.

Oh, absolutely... it would be incredible and I love traveling. I don't suppose I can assume you're offering to fund all of these worldwide jaunts though, eh? Didn't think so hehe but it WILL happen!
