shoes If you fly out of Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) , you might hit it lucky and – hold onto your hat – be asked to leave your shoes on while passing through security.

Starting this summer, tests have been run on a machine called “The PassPort” which is supposed to detect the presence of any explosives that might be used in a shoe bomb. As you move through the device, the PassPort takes samples from your hands, torso and feet, and results are available within a few seconds.

Image Travel writer and airline steward James Wysong recently shared 15 great insider tips on staying in hotels with the travel blog Tripso.com. Most may seem obvious – like, don’t exchange your money with the hotel cashier, and check the plumbing before you do anything else – but there are a few that most people probably don’t think about.  Among our favorites:

Pay attention to room location at check-in. “Don’t get a room by the elevator or ice machine. You will feel the vibrations all night long. It may not be apparent at first, but, believe me, when the lights are out, it will be,” Wysong writes. “[And]  if the hotel has a disco, make sure you get a room at least two floors away. I can’t tell you how many nights in South America I tried to sleep to the beat.". Another idea, close your curtains -  “Because the number of unwitting strip shows that I have been privy to and likely that I have provided myself through the years, is plentiful.”
