China Ordering Pilots to Master Landing in Low Visibility

With the increasing flight disruptions due to smog in China, Chinese officials will soon make it mandatory for pilots flying into Beijing to master low-visibility landings. Beijing Capital International Airport is China’s busiest airport and it also has the worst record for on-time flights of any major international airport in the world. Add to that the low visibility due to the frequent smog in the Beijing area, and it is a recipe for disaster.

Fifth Day of Flight Cancelations in the U.S.

As of 5:45 pm ET on Tuesday close to 1,400 flights had been canceled across the U.S. due to severe winter weather from a storm system that seemed to crawl slowly through the mid-Atlantic region. The information on flight cancelations came from the flight-tracking service FlightAware. Newark Liberty Airport experienced 280 of those flight cancelations, a total of both arriving and departing flights. New York LaGuardia and Philadelphia airports reported 200 flight cancelations between the two of them.

Flights in the UK Return to Normal after Technical Problem

The main airports in London experienced cancellations and delays on Saturday due to a technical glitch with the air traffic control telephone systems. Heathrow, Gatwick, and Stansted airports canceled a fifth of their flights. Meanwhile, other airports in the area experienced flight delays of up to two hours. The problem was at the National Air Traffic Services' (Nats) control centre, which is responsible for controlling all air traffic in southern England.
