A Bad Economy Makes For A Good Time To Travel
Monday, 29 December 2008
Image The travel industry is headed into a tough period, according to industry insiders. Airlines are hurting for business, cruise bookings have dropped by 50 percent, and hotel rooms are sitting empty.

As gloomy as that sounds, it’s good news for travelers looking for deals.

Experts like Carolyn Spencer Brown, editor of Cruisecritic.com, say that bargains are the hot topic. “We are focusing more on deals than we ever have in five years," she recently told the San Francisco Chronicle. Brown said that she’s seen Bahamas cruises going for as little as $25 per night and she's not astonished by those $25 per night figures because "they're desperate to fill their ships."

Additionally, hotel chains are coming up with inventive ways to lure guests. Throughout December, Starwood Hotels offered a deal where you could pay a rate equal to your birth year for a second or third night (if you were born in 1967, you’d pay $67) at Sheraton and Westin hotels. And Millennium Hotels and Resorts offers a food and beverage credit of $100 per night at some of their locations.

Air travel continues to be expensive, but experts say that if you can be flexible with your travel dates, you can save a few dollars. But the real deal right now, says the Chronicle, is Hawaii, where packages gave dropped to as low as $383, including hotel.
