As of July, 2006, United Airlines is the world's second-largest airline by revenue-passenger-miles), third-largest by total operating revenues, and fourth-largest by total passengers transported. United has over 55,000 employees and operates 460 aircraft. On February 1, 2006, United emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection under which it had operated since December 9, 2002, the largest and longest airline bankruptcy case in history.
The long and convaluted history of the airline can be dated back to 1926 when the Varney Airlines air mail service of Walter Varney, who also founded Continental Airlines first took to the air.
United's web site has a large amount of information including details of their in-flight services, regularly updated flight status info, and many other services which can be found here.
