Alaska Airlines Pilots Go Lean And Green With iPads
Tuesday, 31 May 2011
Alaska Airline pilots will start carrying iPads, weighing in at a mere one and a half pounds, which will replace the 25 pounds of flight manuals they have been required to carry with them on all flights. The iPad will lighten the load for the pilots and the distribution of the iPads will be completed by the middle of June.

This decision was made after conducting a successful trial of 100 instructor and line pilots, which took place during the past winter and spring. Alaska is the first major domestic airline to implement the use of iPads and the iPad will hold 41 various manuals, reference cards, electronic versions of navigation charts, and more.

Alaska Airlines' vice president of flight operations, Gary Beck, says that they have been considering an electronic flight bag for a number of years, but had never before found a device that they liked. The iPad is the ideal device and the use of it will save approximately 2.4 million pieces of paper each year.
