On Friday American Eagle Airlines announced that starting next spring they will be adding service from Waterloo and Sioux Springs, Iowa, to Chicago O'Hare Airport. American Eagle is a regional-service affiliate of American Airlines and the U.S. Department of Transportation will subsidize flights under the Essential Air Service Program.
American Eagle plans to operate two flights daily from each of the cities in Iowa to Chicago with jets that have 44 and 50 seats. The Essential Air Service Program was set up in order to ensure that smaller cities would retain air service when the airlines were deregulated 30 years ago. However, the program is under fire as many consider it to be too expensive. See the original Google News article for more details. |
