Amtrak is celebrating its best January ever when it comes to ridership, with the numbers coming in at 2,126,429 passengers riding the rails that month. This marks a year-over-year increase of 4.6% between January 2011 and January 2010. These numbers also mark the 15th month in a row that ridership has grown, from November 2009 to January 2011, and is part of the trend that has seen increases in annual ridership for 7 of the last 8 years with an average monthly growth rate of 6%. The need and demand for a national intercity rail system is supported by these growing numbers, says Joe Boardman, President and CEO of Amtrak. He also expects ridership to continue to grow as the price of oil continues to rise closer to $100 per barrel. With some economic recovery, business travel has also begun to bounce back along the Northern Corridor and rail travel is becoming more popular among the general population. |
