Amtrakis 40 years old! On May 1, 1971, Amtrak began operating its first passenger train and continues to do so. To celebrate the 40 year anniversary of the company, passengers can enjoy discounted fares and a walk through memory lane as they browse the history of Amtrak through the photos displayed on their website. There is also a documentary and a book and the Amtrak Exhibit Train will be touring the country for a whole year after it is displayed at the National Train Day event on May 7.
The company has grown steadily over the years and has set annual ridership records in 7 of the last 8 years. Amtrak was born through the passing of the Rail Passenger Service Act of 1970, which ensured that the U.S. government was committed to ensuring the country had an efficient and modern intercity rail service. In 2008 Passenger Rail Improvement and Investment Act was passed, which shows the continued support of the U.S. government. The company celebrates 40 years of dedicated service. |
