The Best and Worst Travel Taxes in U.S. Destinations
Friday, 22 July 2011
The a href="http://www.gbtafoundation.org/" target="_blank"> Global Business Travel Association (GBTA) conducted it annual study of hotel, meal, and car rental taxes and have released the results. The focus of the study are the top 50 U.S. cities to which people travel. The results of the survey revealed that travelers incur an average of a 56% cost increase over regular sales tax due to travel related discriminatory taxes.

GBTA Foundation director of Research, Joe Bates, says that the difference in these discriminatory taxes varies extensively between cities and that business planning meetings in a different city need to take this into consideration. An example of this is the 80% more paid in taxes in Chicago as compared to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

The lowest taxes are found in Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Fort Myers, Florida; West Palm Beach, Florida; Detroit, Michigan; and Portland, Oregon. The highest taxes are found in Chicago, Illinois; New York City, New York; Seattle, Washington; Boston, Massachusetts; and Kansas City, Missouri.
