There are take-off and landing slots available at New York’s LaGuardia and Washington’s Reagan National airports and JetBlue and Southwest are the leading contenders. There are seven registered bidders for the openings and none of them are traditional full-fare airlines. That means that whoever wins the bidding process will be able to offer cheaper flights, prompting the bigger airlines to do the same. The airports in question are attractive for airlines because they are busy in terms of business flyers, the ones who generally purchase the more expensive tickets. The slots that are available are being given up by Delta Airlines and US Airways, as required by the federal government as a condition for their own trade. The other airlines in the bidding include WestJet Airlines Ltd., Frontier Airlines, Spirit Airlines Inc., Allegiant Travel Co., and Sun Country Airlines Inc.
