The Summer Olympic Games in Beijing will be bringing is an estimated 550,000 visitors to the city, and officials are planning a gala event – so far, the tab for new Olympics-related facilities includes 30 new sports venues, new apartments for the other 2,000 athletes, new subway and light railway lines, and extensive renovations on existing sports venues to allow disabled competitors to compete in the Paralympics in September. But other tourist destinations are getting a face lift, as well. While visits will be limited to many ancient sites, Beijing has spent over 77 million dollars to repair and protect heritage sites like the Forbidden City, the Confucian Temple and Imperial College, and to install signs in Chinese and English.
