schmap You may not be aware that you can use your computer to create a custom travel guide with Schmap, a free online service that allows you to download integrated information and slide shows to your home computer or iPhone.

To use, simply download the Schmap software and you have access to dozens of guides to cities in the U.S., Europe, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand with multiple maps, directions and layered, categorized entries for hotels, restaurants, bars and attractions. You can bookmark your favorites, print maps, and compile your own itineraries and have them with you when you travel.

Schmap has become even more useful with the release of an application for iPhones and iPod Touch, which utilizes the gyro sensors to switch between two display modes depending on how you’re holding the device – hold it vertically, and the Schmap lists local points of interest as a simple list. Hold it horizontally, and the points are overlaid on a map of the area, meaning that to swap modes all you have to do is turn the iPhone, turning your device into an instant, interactive travel guide on the go.

You can read more about it and download the application at the Schmap website: http://www.schmap.com
