Bypass Lines At Passport Kiosks
Thursday, 16 October 2008
passport card You may be able to get through customs checkpoints a lot faster than you think – but it’s not your fault if you never heard about it until now. According to USA Today, kiosks at three airports allow travelers to swipe their passports  and skip the regular customs lines, but a lack of marketing has kept it something of a secret.

Called the “Global Entry Program,” the kiosks were launched on June 10 by the Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) bureau at New York Kennedy (Terminal 4), Houston Intercontinental and Washington Dulles airports. 1300 U.S. passport holders signed up for the program when it was announced in May, submitting to a background check paying a $100 fee that’s good for five years.  As of late August, 464 people had used the service.

Program director John Wagner told USA Today that enrollment was about what they expected, and travel experts predict that the program will gain momentum after it’s launched in Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami and Atlanta airports this fall, eventually expanding to 20 international airports. CBP also hopes to coordinate with the United Kingdom, Germany and the Netherlands to allow Global Entry participants faster passage through customs in those countries, as well.
