This year marks the 125th anniversary of Camping at the Y, an annual tradition that began with just a small group of friends from a local Y who decided to go camping and experience what nature has to offer. This small camping group paved the way for today's celebrations, Y camps, and camping programs. In 1885, a Y volunteer named Sumner Dudley, took 7 teens camping at Orange Lake, New York. His goal was to help build character in these teens, but what happened was so much more. This became the first continuously-running Y camp. Early camps consisted of a flagpole around which were situated some tents and a camp fire. / Now the camps service boys and girls and men and women of all ages and the American Camping Association was created in 1910 with a Y Camp Director serving as the association's first president. The Y currently offers camping experiences from the Rocky Mountains to the coast of Maine and more than 800,000 children and adults enjoy camping each year. |
