Polio is a disease that has been eradicated in the U.S. and in many other countries around the world. However, there are still many countries in which there is still a risk of coming into contact with polio. Polio is a disease that can have very serious consequences, including paralysis and even death. The CDC recommends that anyone traveling to any of the countries in which polio is still a threat be sure that they are up-to-date with their polio vaccinations and to get a polio booster if they are not. Those traveling to countries where polio is a risk should consult with their doctor before going. While there they should ensure good hygiene, washing their hands with warm water and soap frequently and especially after coughing, sneezing, using the washroom, or changing a diaper and before eating or drinking. Countries that are at risk include, but are not limited to Russia, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, and India. |
