Check For Car Rental Damages

There’s more reason than ever to read the fine print when you rent a car. According to travel columnist Christopher Elliott, auto rental agencies “are preying on customers who gloss over their vehicle inspections,” hitting unsuspecting renters with charges for damages after they’ve returned their vehicles and returned home, where it’s unlikely they can do anything to disprove the claims.
Elliott offers the first-hand experience of a renter who received a bill several weeks after returning a rental car. When she called to ask about the charge, she was told that there had been $200 in damage to a side mirror, and that the rental agent didn’t mention it at the time of the return “to avoid confrontation.” While he’s hesitant to come right out and accuse car rental companies of coaching their employees to target renters who don’t fill out damage forms, Elliott does caution that stories like this are becoming more and more common. So read the fine print, talk to rental agents, and make sure you establish that there’s no damage when you drop off your car. |
