Commercial Flights Resume To Haiti
Friday, 19 February 2010
CNN has reported that the U.S. has resumed commercial flights to Haiti, flights that were previously suspended due to the earthquake that shook the country on January 12. American Airlines was the first to resume flights to Haiti, with a flight from Miami to Port-au-Prince, and American and American Eagle resumed flights the day after the earthquake in order to bring in emergency supplies, relief workers, and to evacuate people from hard-hit areas.

The earthquake, which measured 7.0 on the Richter scale, was responsible for the deaths of at least 212,000 people, according to reports from the government of Haiti. It also damaged many buildings in Haiti, including some buildings at Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Port-au-Prince. American Airlines has more than 100 employees stationed in Port-au-Prince and has serviced Haiti since 1971. With the return to scheduled flights to Haiti, American Airlines plans to operate three flights per day to the country.
