Delta Air Lines is refunding taxes on tickets that were purchased on July 22 or earlier for travel July 23 or later. This announcement came on Monday and is the result of changes in the funding for the FAA. The funding for the FAA was halted as of July 23, which meant that taxes that were previously collected on airline tickets and other service-related taxes are no longer charged on tickets purchased after the July 23 date. Delta Airlines is refunding passengers who paid the taxes, including the base tax of 7.5% that was paid on the ticket price, the segment tax of $3.70, and other taxes related to the facility. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is advising travelers who purchased tickets before July 23 for travel between July 23 and the date when FAA funding was reinstated to seek out a refund for the taxes paid. Delta is just waiting for word from the IRS on the proper procedure for issuing refunds at which time the refunds will be made directly to the customer.
