Disabled Man Refused Flight on easyJet
Tuesday, 17 January 2012
On January 4, Dr. Martin Sabry was not allowed to board his flight from Gatwick to Montpellier because he was in a wheelchair. Dr. Sabry has been in a wheelchair for 17 years, the result of being paralysed due to a mountaineering accident. The rules of the aircraft is that any passenger traveling alone must be able to make it to the emergency exit on their own. On this flight Dr. Sabry was assured he would be able to travel, but was then held up at the last minute as the pilot refused to let him on board or to speak with him.

In the end, Dr. Sabry waited for hours before he was able to speak to the airline's management, after which they flew him to Toulouse and then paid for his taxi to Montpellier. EasyJet was fined £60,000 last week for banning passengers from boarding at the Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris in 2008 and 2009. Since July 2007 the Disability Discrimination Act has stated that no airline can refuse boarding to a disabled passenger who has paid for their ticket and has a reservation.
