 Confused about rental car insurance coverage? You’re not alone. According to USA Today, a survey by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) found that 42 percent of car renters are “either thoroughly confused or had only a rough idea about insurance” and found that many people pay for insurance coverage that they don’t really need.NAIC president Walter Bell told USA Today that consumers should check to find out if their own auto insurance and their credit cards offer sufficient coverage first, and to understand the requirements. Some personal policies won’t cover business trips, for example, or international rentals. The consensus among those interviewed for the USA Today story is that insurance waivers are a big profit-maker for rental companies, and they charge too much for the coverage. So … should you decline when it’s offered? Maybe not. Expensive as it is, it may still be your best bet should something happen to your rental car, especially when you’re out of the country – some credit cards require you to pay for damages yourself and then pursue a reimbursement later, which can be an enormous hassle.
