Southwest Airlines, based in Dallas, has received the green light from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to combine their services with those of AirTran Airways, which is based in Orlando. This follows on the heals of the acquisition of AirTran by Southwest, which was announced on September 27, 2010. The two airlines still have separate operating certificates, but the transition plan that has been accepted by the FAA allows for progression to a Single Operating Certificate (SOC) through specific methodologies and processes that have been outlined in the plan. The FAA will issue the SOC once the steps in the transition plan have been executed. Southwest Airlines has assured AirTran employees that they will retain their current position until such time as the SOC is issued and then they will be transitioned to become employees of Southwest, although the logistics of how that transition will be made have not yet been determined. |
