Sunday was one of the busiest travel days of the entire year and despite a large storm system that moved through the eastern and central US over the weekend. On Sunday night there were flood warnings issued in many states, including Kentucky, North Carolina, Arkansas, Tennessee, Indiana, and Illinois and in parts of South Carolina and Georgia flash flood warnings were issued. There were warnings that the rain could change to snow showers on Sunday night, but despite the poor weather air travel did not seem to be severely affected. John F. Kennedy and Westchester County airports in New York and Teterboro Airport in New Jersey had experienced delays earlier in the day, but by Sunday night were running on schedule. Continental Airlines had warned about possible delays due to bad weather, but two hours later the FAA had no reports of delays.
