Flights at Heathrow on Time Thanks to IT System
Thursday, 01 December 2011
Despite the national strike over public pensioned on Wednesday that affected immigration officers and border patrol, flights at Heathrow were running 100% on time. This incredible performance was due to business process management software that the airport had begun using in 2009, software that BAA said helped increase the airport's on-time departures from 68% to 83%. Prior to the strike the media was painting a bleak picture, predicting 12-hour waits for passengers as queues formed at the passport booths.

Precautions were taken ahead of time by airlines servicing the airport. Some airlines, such as Virgin and British Airways, canceled flights and other flights reduced their numbers so that total numbers of passengers flying into Heathrow were down about a third. The software was developed by Pegasystems and runs on the Oracle database, using rules created by BAA in order to ensure smooth daily operation of the airport.
