Saturday marked the beginning of violence and clashes between sit-in protestors in downtown Cairo, forcing the cancelation of 63 flights into and out of Egypt. There were also indications of other protests to come on Tuesday. Flight cancelations total 39 EgyptAir flights as well as 14 flights from other airlines, such as flights to Tunisia, Jordan, and Italy. The situation has prompted many European tourism companies to cancel trips and reservations to the Red Sea region, according to the head of the Red Sea Tourism Investment Association, Ali Reda. These European countries represent a major source of tourism for the Red Sea region and continued violence and upheaval will severely damage Egypt's tourism industry. The next few days will give an indication of the impact the violence is having on tourism. See the original Google News article for more details. |
