Flights Delayed as Israeli Union Strikes
Thursday, 09 February 2012
The state-run radio waves have fallen silent for the most part as the largest labor union in Israel has started strike action, which is has no specified end date and that involves services throughout the nation. The strike is causing government offices, banks, rail service, seaports, and the stock exchange to close down. The strike action also included workers at the Ben-Gurion International Airport, who participated in the strike until noon on Wednesday.

The strike is in protest of the increased use of contract workers for jobs that were once performed by permanent employees. This is going on in both the public and private sectors and the contract workers are getting paid less and do not have access to benefits that employees enjoy.

The strike was called in the overnight hours by Histadrut labor federation after talks with the Financial Ministry broke down. Statistics from the Israeli government indicate that the average wage for employees in Israel is $2300 per month and for contract workers it is $1000 per month. The strike could cost the economy $100 million per day.
