Thursday, 07 July 2016
The U.S. Transportation Department announced Thursday that flights on eight U.S. airlines to Havana could begin as early as this fall. American Airlines has the largest share of the routes. Itís been around a year since the U.S. and Cuba re-established diplomatic relations and the decision includes 35 flights a week on American. The runner-up, JetBlue, got 27 slots per week. The FAA will review any objections and make a final decision later this summer. Other flights included those on Delta, United, Southwest, Alaska Air, Spirit Airlines, and Frontier.

In June the FAA gave airlines permission to fly to other cities in Cuba. The cities that received the most flights are Miami and Fort Lauderdale, at 83 flights per week among six different airlines. Strong demand will come from people visiting relatives and execs travelling for business.
