The UK government has announced that they are increasing the UK air passenger duty (APD). The increase will come into effect next April and will increase from STG85 ($A130) to STG92 ($A141). This affects all passengers traveling from the UK to Australia and New Zealand. The announcement has prompted trans-Tasman tourism groups to ask for government intervention in the matter and the Tourism and Transport Forum Australia and Tourism Industry Association New Zealand made a joint announcement that referred to the APD as a "discriminatory, arbitrary tax." The UK already holds the prize for having the highest departure tax in the world and this tax increase would make it significantly more expensive for a family of four to enjoy a trip to Australia. It is said that the increase in the APD is being made to offset carbon emissions. See the original Google News article for more details. |
