China has a growing concern with smog and Monday the smog was so bad that close to 500 flights departing from Beijing had to be either delayed or canceled. Poor weather also played a part in the grounding of the flights as a light snow fell on the city. However, the smog was the key factor and the US Embassy's pollution monitoring system rated the smog on Monday as “hazardous.” Pollution has been a growing concern in China, a country that is home to 21 of the 100 most polluted cities in the world. Over the past few months residents of Beijing have been complaining about the air quality and the discrepancies between the official pollution data published by Beijing authorities and that published by the US Embassy. The smog settled in on Sunday and was rated as light pollution by Beijing, but off the charts according to the US Embassy. See the original Google News article for more details. |
