Those who fly in and out of Delhi, especially those who do so frequently, know all to well that winter in Delhi can make the flight schedule unpredictable. This past Monday a thick blanket of fog settled over the area, causing 12 flights to be grounded and many others to be delayed. The same time last year chaos also ensued as 25 flights were canceled, 30 were diverted, and more than 150 were delayed for as much as six hours at the Indira Gandhi International airport. During the holiday season of 2008/2009 hundreds of flights were disrupted. The bad fog in Delhi began to get very bad in 1997, with a combination of pollution, a change in land-use patterns, and more moisture in the air being the cause. Once visibility is less than 50 meters, delays are unavoidable, according to E. K. Bharat Bhushan, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, who says that their focus is on making passengers comfortable during these delays. However, analysts say the problem also lies in the fact that not all aircraft are equipped with advanced CAT IIIB instruments and only 40%-50% of pilots are trained in the use of such equipment.
