Starting on January 20 the Mumbai Airport will experience flight delays over a four month period as the main runway is shut down in order to convert it to a rapid exit runway. The secondary runway will be the only operational runway, but since it cannot accommodate as many flights as the main runway, passengers can expect flight delays of up to 40 minutes. The main runway will be closed down daily for the transition, except for peak departure times in the morning and peak arrival times at night. The result of the construction will be a rapid exit taixway (RET) will allow for the lower time for aircraft to occupy the runway and this means that ultimately the airport will be able to accommodate more flights per day. The completion date for the RET is June 1, 2012. See the original Google News article for more details. |
