Smith Travel Research tracks the data for supply and demand for U.S. hotels and the company has announced that during the summer hotel rates will drop while occupancy rates increase. The report issued by Smith Travel Research states that during the summer months of June, July, and August, rates will decrease by 1.9% while occupancy rates will increase by 2.2%. This means that the per-room revenue will remain consistent with that of 2009.
However, no matter how good the newly released figures may appear, Brad Garner, Vice President at Smith Travel Research, says that rate growth is still a concern for the hotel industry. Travelers simply won't be spending as much money this summer as they have in the past and this means either flat or slightly negative rate growth this year. Of the summer months, July is projected to have the highest occupancy rates, estimated to be at 64.4%. |
