U.S. House Passes "Travel Promotion Act"
Friday, 16 October 2009
US Travel Association With strong support the Travel Protection Act was recently passed in the U.S. House of Representatives. The vote was a decisive 358 to 66 in favour of the act and the purpose of the act is to help better promote the U.S. as a travel destination and to help explain security measures taken in the U.S. The Senate also passed the same legislation in September, but another vote by the Senate must be held within the next few weeks, due to issues with procedural dynamics.

Roger Dow, President and CEO of the U.S. Travel Association, says that this legislation is desperately needed when it comes to international and diplomatic affairs. Even the International Olympic Committee recently voted in favour of the U.S. developing a means to better explain their security procedures to international travelers.

This new act will create 4000 jobs and is estimated to increase consumer spending by $4 billion as foreign visitors spend an average of $4500 per person per trip. This will help to reduce the federal deficit by a whopping $425 million over the next 10 years. The Travel Promotion Act is co-sponsored by Representatives William Delahunt and Roy Blunt and is modeled after successful programs run at the state level.
