Green travel is all the rage, and car rental companies are starting to get the message. Agencies in the bigger cities and major airports are the first to offer hybrid rentals, and you’re sure to see more in the near future. The travel writers at the LA Times took a look at the current state of hybrid rentals, and here’s what they found:Toyota and Saturn hybrids are available for rent through Enterprise, National, plus you can buy carbon offsets through TerraPass, which contributes to an emissions-offset project. The cost per rental is $1.25, and goes into a fund that supports clean energy like wind farms. Avis and Budget can rent you a Prius, Nissan Altima or Ford Escape hybrid, while Avis, Budget, Enterprise, National and Alamo offer flexible-fuel vehicles, which run on a blend of ethanol and gasoline (if you can find a station that sells the fuel). Elsewhere, Hertz says it will have 3,400 Toyota Priuses by the end of the year. If you want to go green while in Maui, Bio-Beetle (www.bio-beetle.com) rents cars that run on bio-fuels, and claim that their Jettas are good for 400 miles on one tank. And Simply Hybrid (www.simplyhybrid.com) in Los Angeles rents only hybrids, including Camry, Prius and Highlander hybrids, the Escape, the Civic, the Lexus RX and the GMC Yukon.
