Iberia Experiences More Flight Cancelations Due to Strikes
Tuesday, 10 January 2012
A new round of strikes by the pilots of Iberia has resulted in the cancelation of more than 200 flights on Monday and Wednesday. Monday will see the cancelation of 109 flights and Wednesday's total will 104 flights. A spokeswoman for the airline has said that all passengers affected by the cancelations have been contacted and offered alternative travel arrangements, but this has been difficult with the high level of post-holiday travel currently happening.

The pilots held to similar strikes last month. The strikes are in protest to the new low-cost carrier the airline is planning to launch, one that pilots fear will result in lower wages. The new carrier, Iberia Express, is to be launched in April 2012 and is to be the low-cost solution for short- and mid-haul routes. The airline believes that these routes are losing money and facing stiff competition and the new carrier will help alleviate the problem.
