iPhone App Gives Radiation Exposure Info To Flyers
Wednesday, 27 April 2011
There is now a new iPhone app that will tell users the level of exposure to radiation from solar and galactic sources. This new app, called "SpaceWx" , costs only $1.99 and will give travelers real-time data on levels of radiation coming from solar activity and other sources in space. Available data starts at an altitude of 16,000 feet and all exposure levels are given in terms of altitude and latitude.

The highest radiation exposure is generally experienced at higher altitudes and more northern latitudes and the main target group to use the app are airline passengers, flight crews, and pilots. Senior scientist Dr. Chris Mertens, working out of the NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, says that occupational levels of radiation exposure is not currently tracked and that this app will be the first method of doing so. Mertens was involved in the development of the app, along with Space Environment Technologies Inc., which is located in Pacific Palisades, California.
