Kona Airport to welcome Hawaiian Airlines flights from Japan this month
Tuesday, 06 December 2016
Kona International Airport will once again service flights from Japan on Dec. 20 with the re-establishment of a U.S. Customs station, a move that Gov. David Igesays will improve the overall health of the state of Hawaii by restoring direct flights from Tokyo to a Neighbor Island.

Ige said Thursday that the federal inspection service facility at the Kona airport will increase state revenue and jobs, and reduce congestion at Honolulu International Airport.

The new route from Tokyo's Haneda Airport to Kona will be operated by Hawaiian Airlines, which also added another route from Haneda to Honolulu. The Honolulu-based airline will operate three flights a week between Haneda and Kona and four flights between Haneda and Honolulu.

“Establishing the second airport to welcome international travelers increases the capacity for international travel into Hawaii,” Ige said at a Thursday news conference at the state Capitol. “International travelers spend more money, which boosts the economy and creates more jobs. We estimate that each international flight that arrives in Honolulu generates $7 million to the general fund.”
